I see my urologist at the beginning of April and I'm going to ask him if he can proscribe me (my insurance will pay for them) Abena Abri-Form diapers (I refuse to call them briefs, b/c that's not what they are, they are diapers, and I get extremely offended when they are called briefs.) I also need to purchase Discovery Trekking Containment Swim Diapers, b/c the can help reduce the notice of leaks, the noise that plastic diapers make when you walk or move.I also need help finding protective sheets to cover my bed so it won't soak through them sheets and onto the bed. If any one can help me find a protective sheet in a full or king size, I would really appreciate it.
If anybody can help me out or give me some sort of support so i don't have to feel ashamed of wearing or accidents due to wearing diapers, i would really appreciate it. I don't know who to turn to or what to do, so I'm hoping this group will help support me.
thanks,
liz

Sorry to hear that you are going through a very tough time. I have a good friend that has MS, and is as active as she can be within her personal limits. Making the best of things isn't always easy, but it is necessary.
Bed Protector
Fitted Cover
Don't bother with the swim diaper. They are designed to keep solids in, not fluids. You might want to look at Comco Pants to reduce leaks and noise. They are inexpensive and durable. Wash warm, dry on the lowest heat setting or tumble cool.
Abena is a good choice for heavy wettings. Secure Personal Care is another good brand that is made in more locally. I have used the X-Plus from SPC and it easily lasts overnight for me. Both brands will do well for several hours at a time.
There are many good members on this board, so don't be too shy. Nobody is here to criticize.
Cheers.

So sorry to hear of all your troubles. I too am incontinent due to a freak accident while in the Marine Corps'. It takes a lot getting use to as far as wearing a diaper goes. I look at it this way, would you rather have people noticing you because of wet pants or might notice you because you have to wear a diaper? I prefer the latter. No one goes around looking at other people's butts, (Except maybe young horny guys), so don't worry what other people are looking at. I use strictly disposable diapers and always cover them with a good pair of plastic pants. I use Leak Master Plus from "Adult Cloth Diaper.com". They also have the plastic mattress covers and any other supplies you might need and deal with most insurance companies, including the VA..(for us Veterans). Another good company located on the west coast of the U.S. is "Professional Fit Clothing.com" They custom make most of their products, especially for those in wheel chairs. I use them for their custom made onesies for adult diaper users. Unlike most T-shirt onesies, these one's are made to look like polo shirts, or golf shirts. These come with a collar and have many different colors. If you need any more advice please feel free to PM me or any other member on this site. It is what we are here for.

Hi Liz. I have many of the same issues as you. The MS can lead to many troubles in the immune system. My spine has been inflamed in several locations. The higher up the worse it gets. I have been stable for two years. Currently unable to care for myself. I have daily visits from a home care nurse. As well as my husband, sister and mother. Also several other major health issues. I have been doubly incontinent for quite awhile now. I too have had to give up being cathed and depend on diapers 24/7 . As far as bowel control I have been back and forth between constipation and diarreaha for years now. My meds change and so does my bowel issues. Currently doing ok on a bowel program. Your doctor and nurses should be able to give advice and info on that. Lots of info on the net as well. Sounds like your already working on it. Nothings fool proof but in time you will find what works best for you and your body. If your having a period where you are having bowel events in your diaper. I would suggest a booster pad. Then the booster can be quickly changed and removed until you can get to a better changing location and get cleaned up. The quicker you get cleaned up the less diaper rash will be a problem.
The diapers mentioned by others are all good choices. I would add the Tranquility ATN & boosters for overnight and bad days. I use them at night and during the times my bowel program is not working. And unfortunately leaks are a fact of life for this level of incontinence so a disposable bed pad & or waterproof sheets are recommended. I sleep in a hospital style bed. I'm also in a reclined wheelchair and keep a disposable pad on the seat of that too.

Welcome to the group. You will find lots of support folks here. I second the diaper recommendations others have mentioned. One of the best mattress protection systems I have found is the Save our Sleep brand: http://www.sosmattressprotector.com/

My name is Lori Sherry. I'm 32-years-old now and I'm incontinent due to spina bifida myelomeningocele which is the worst form of spina bifida. I have worn diapers all of my life. I am fully incontinent. I'm paralized from the waist down and I have to use a wheelchair but, I used to be able to walk when I was little but, I'm not able to anymore due to it being too hard. I also have hydrocephalus which is water on the brain so, I have a learning disability. I'm not able to empty my bladder at all. My bladder doesn't hold very much. I do feel pressure so, that's good. I used to be able to catherize but, I'm not able to anymore due to it being too hard but, I can still catheterize though when I go to the doctor. I have had a BUNCH of bladder infections. I'm always having accidents the whole day. I have either a plastic pad or a cloth pad under me to protect me. I sometimes due a suppository but, not usually. Now, I drink ALOT sometimes and sometimes not. I get constipated but, it's because that I don't eat right. Well, I have had some sores and a pretty bad sore but, that's because I wasn't watching myself so, I'm careful about that now. I'm VERY independent and I'm able to change myself but, I have my mom change me also. I'm in a wheelchair so, the creaks don't bother me and I accept wearing diapers.
WOW! I'm SO sorry about that. I'm SO sorry about everything you have to go through. I'm SO sorry about the bladder infections and I know how those can be. Don't be scared though. There really isn't anything to be scared of. I'm sorry. Maybe, you can put a pad in your diaper and an underpad on your bed. Doing a suppository is a good idea but, maybe you should do them like every other day. You really NEED to do something for your constipation. Maybe have some fiber in your diet. Don't worry about having accidents. Yes, people will ALWAYS ALWAYS watch you and you will get laughed at but, you don't need that not now not ever. You NEED to watch yourself.Well, your boyfriend isn't supposed to change you anyway. You should be angry and scared in that way. PLEASE NEVER EVER EVER let him change you. Briefs are just another name for diapers, that's all. I think they do that because babies wear diapers so, they think that adults wear briefs but, that shouldn't upset you. You don't really use that word, it's just another word for a diaper. Don't worry about the creaks either.
If you're scared which I know you are there really isn't any way to get out of it. You really need support and I hope that you will get it from the group.
Good Luck,
Lori Sherry

I can some what relate I am 28 and have been incontient for years. I really hate the fact I need diapers and very self conscious worried someone will find out. That said I try not to let it hold me back I work as a Paramedic and have been able to hide them for years. I found out as long as you wear a quality diaper it is easy to hide back when I was have more bowel issuses I found that a plastic covered diapers keeps the odor in better, now i mainly just wet. They other thing is try different brands I use mainly Tena Ultra's but at night or time I need more absorbency I use either molicare, tranquility, or abena's. I also use a body suit or onsie type shirt to hind them. As someone said before don't let your BF change you tell him NO and talk to him tell him how it makes you feel the only exction is if you can't do it, I remember right after my accident I was unbale to do it and needed help but I explained to the nurse how it felt and she worked with meto make it better. As for caths I also stop using them do to infections. There are time that diapers have been great you get to see the full movie at the theater, no worring about leaving in the middle of a big test. I hope this help if you need anything just ask I am more than willing to help. One quick thing I use a back pack to carry my diapers and no one ever knows whats in it besides me.
